My daughter had an accident and knocked out one of her front teeth. What should I do?

Be sure to hold the tooth by the crown and not the roots. The first thing you need to do is place the tooth in milk or a hanks balanced salt solution. If these are not available, place the tooth in the mouth and hold it in a place where it will not be accidently swallowed. Do not rub the tooth with your tongue.  This should be done immediately.  The roots of a tooth that has been knocked out are susceptible to damage from heat, cold and dehydration.

Within 30 minute you should see your dentist. Once you get to the dentist, they should be able to place the tooth back into the socket if the tooth is not damaged.

If you are not able to see the dentist within 30 minutes, you can try to place the tooth back in the socket.  Face the tooth the correct way and try to gently push the tooth back into the socket. Do not use excessive force or you could damage the roots. You will still need to see your dentist as soon as possible.

The tooth will need to be bonded to the other teeth to secure it in the socket. This will ensure that the tooth does not move or fall out again.  It is likely will need a root canal either immediately or when the tooth stabilizes.

Remember that there is no guarantee that a tooth that is replaced will re-attach.  If there is damage to the roots the tooth will need to be pulled.

If you or your children place sports a fitted mouth guard should always be worn. The mouth guard will protect the teeth from this type of injury.
