What is the difference between a Bite-wing x-ray and a Panoramic X-ray?

A panoramic x-ray shows the entire mouth area in one picture. This includes all the teeth, upper and lower jaw, and the temporomandibular joint.  This x-ray provides an overview of the condition of your teeth and jaws. It allows your dentist to easily see the position of fully emerged, emerging teeth, impacted teeth, and aiding in the diagnosis of tumors. This does not provide fine detail which limits its effectiveness for diagnosing cavities.

Bite-wing x-rays provide a detailed look at the upper and lower teeth in one area of the mouth. Each bite-wing will show the tooth from the crown to the bone. This x-ray provides a much finer picture aids in the diagnosis of cavities and bone loss.  A bite wing is used to determine the proper fit of a crown.

It is important for your dentist to have both bite-wing and panoramic x-rays. With both types of x-rays your dentist is able to have a full understanding of your complete oral health. These allow a dentist to provide an accurate treatment plan based on your individual needs.
