With so many toothpaste options available, does it matter which brand I use? My grandma just used baking soda; what is best?

It really doesn’t matter what toothpaste you use so long as it has fluoride.  Most toothpaste available today has fluoride. 

Baking soda is not to be used anymore. Baking soda is extremely abrasive and can cause damage to the surface of your teeth.  Baking soda does not contain the fluoride you need to help prevent cavities or re-mineralize your teeth.

In order to get your teeth properly cleaned you need to brush correctly and with the right kind of tooth brush. 

How to brush properly:

• Short back and forth and up and down strokes
• Be sure to give extra attention to your back teeth, areas around fillings,  and gum lines
• Brush outer and inner surfaces of both top and bottom teeth
• Brush your tongue
• Brush for a minimum of 2 minutes and no more than 3 minutes

How to pick a toothbrush:

• Always choose a soft bristled brush
• Choose a brush that fits well in your hand without causing stress or strain
• The head of the brush should fit comfortably in your mouth and be able to reach all exposed tooth surfaces
• Using a children’s toothbrush is fine
• Change your toothbrush ever 3 months

In case of emergency, if you have to choose between a toothbrush or toothpaste, pick up a toothbrush.  Mechanical cleansing of teeth is the most important aspect of oral hygienic maintenance. 

Flossing your teeth after each brushing is also required.
